Who are The Pinckards?

We're Dan & Laura - husband and wife photographers & educators who care deeply about authenticity

We fell into photography the way most of us do: learning by doing, making mistakes, and obsessing over the images we wanted to make. Over the years that turned into a signature creative style, including our double-exposure work, and a business that sends us to beautiful places for elopements and intimate weddings.

Our story revolves around a journey of discovering our true selves (as opposed to who we thought we were supposed to be), and then learning to ignore the expectations, pressures, and judgements that used to control us.

When we started photography, it felt like we were stumbling in the dark — no roadmap, no mentors, just a lot of trial and error, stubborn determination, and late nights obsessing over how to bring the images in our heads to life.

But the bigger challenge wasn’t technical. It was the weight of expectations. We grew up in environments where we were taught to live for other people’s approval. Where “success” was measured by how well we fit the mold, how perfectly we followed the rules, and how little we questioned authority. That mindset bled into our early years of photography. We worried constantly about what other photographers thought of us, whether we were good enough, and if we’d ever be “accepted” in the industry.

And honestly? We weren’t accepted. Early on, photographers we looked up to treated us poorly. We were misunderstood, gossiped about, and even blocked by people who had never met us. It was painful, but it became a turning point. We realized that living for other people’s approval — whether in life or in photography — would always leave us feeling inadequate.

So we made a choice: to stop chasing what we were “supposed” to be and start building something that actually felt like us.

That decision changed everything. Instead of copying trends, we created the images we wanted to make — the ones that felt honest, raw, and meaningful. That’s how our signature double exposures were born.

Instead of building a business that fit the industry’s mold, we designed one that gave us freedom, adventure, and the chance to tell real stories through elopements and intimate weddings all over the world. And instead of hiding behind perfection, we embraced progress — one step at a time, learning as we went, determined not to quit.

Breaking free from those old expectations gave us more than just a business. It gave us a life that feels like our own.

And that’s exactly why we created Shoot Bigger. We know what it’s like to feel weighed down by pressure, comparison, and the endless voices telling you what you “should” be doing. We know how easy it is to get caught up in shortcuts and quick fixes that promise overnight success but never deliver. And we know how lonely it feels when you’re trying to carve your own path.

Shoot Bigger is our way of saying: you don’t have to do it alone.

This community is for photographers who are relentless in their pursuit of growth — not hustling for the sake of hustling, but choosing discipline, determination, and long-term growth over instant gratification. It’s about building something sustainable, exciting, and authentic. Something you’ll still be proud of ten years from now.

Because if there’s one thing our journey has taught us, it’s this: the moment you stop trying to live up to someone else’s expectations is the moment you finally give yourself permission to create something extraordinary.

And that’s what we want for you.

With Shoot Bigger our goal is to help other photographers build authentic businesses that are sustainable, exciting, and profitable. This isn’t about shortcuts or overnight success. It’s about longevity and building something you’re passionate about.
